About

Welcome to The Steaming Pot – a collection of easy vegetarian recipes and tips for the newbie to Indian cooking.

I never entered the kitchen while I grew up with family in north India, content to eat the lip-smacking stuff mom made. When I began working, a couple of friends and I shared an apartment. We distributed kitchen responsibilities. I couldn’t cook to save my life so the task of washing the utensils fell to my share.

However innovatively I would scrub and polish, I soon saw that there was no long-term creative satisfaction to be had in dishwashing. The chopping and churning, boiling and frying going on alongside began to draw me in.

The three of us were from different corners of the country – one from Punjab, the other from Andhra, I from Bihar. My early cooking had influences of all. During vacations at home I would now stand and watch, ask questions, as my mom prepared meals. It has been a couple of years since then and cooking has become one of my favorite pastimes. Exchanging tips with friends, reading recipe books, online video tutorials, and experience have helped.

On most days my meals are simple, vegetarian, and quick. That’s what I talk about in this space.

I hope that my writings on The Steaming Pot are a useful introduction to Indian cooking. Browse through the recipe gallery, try out the recipes and tips, and do tell me how they worked for you. I’d love to hear your comments.
